The Making of a Bespoke Kani Shawl
To call a Kani shawl a product is a disservice. It is not produced — it is composed. At vonoz cashmere, each bespoke Kani shawl is a confluence of art, memory, and mastery. Our Kani Collection honors this tradition through every stitch — from concept to final thread.
It Begins With a Drawing
Each bespoke piece starts as a detailed visual composition, created digitally or by hand. But this is just the beginning. In our atelier in Srinagar, master artisans interpret this image into a complex weaving code called talim. The image is deconstructed into thousands of color instructions — every millimeter precisely accounted for.
This talim is then read aloud and memorized by the weavers — a tradition passed from teacher to apprentice for generations.
Two Weavers, One Vision
Using fine handspun cashmere and tiny wooden sticks called kanis, two weavers sit side by side, often for months, building the pattern line by line. No machines. No shortcuts. Just rhythm, repetition, and unrivaled focus.
Each color change is a decision. Each motif a conversation between hands. The process is at once mathematical and deeply human.
Precision at Every Level
The yarn tension, dye balance, and even air humidity are carefully managed throughout the creation. In some pieces, we combine Kani weaving with hand embroidery to add even more dimensionality. Others are double-face — two patterns, mirrored on both sides, woven as one.
A Heirloom in the Making
Each bespoke Kani shawl by vonoz is signed with invisible precision. It is not fashion — it is a time capsule. A story in fabric. A collector’s piece that carries not only beauty, but weight: the time, care and legacy that created it.
