Is Hanging Cashmere a Good Idea?

Hanging a cashmere shawl may seem natural — yet for those who value longevity, softness, and the preservation of craftsmanship, this question deserves a closer look. At vonoz, where each shawl is a handwoven artifact, we approach storage with as much care as creation.

So: is hanging cashmere a good idea? The short answer is — not usually. Here's why.

1. Gravity and Fiber Stress

Cashmere is a delicate fiber. When suspended vertically over time, especially on thin or hard hangers, its natural elasticity can begin to:

  • Stretch the weave, especially in the shoulders and middle
  • Distort shape, particularly in longer shawls or mufflers
  • Lead to creases or pressure lines
This is especially true for handspun or loosely woven pieces like those in our Kashmiri Heritage Collection.

2. Risk of Snagging or Slipping

Shawls can easily slip from smooth hangers or snag on wooden splinters, metal edges, or even buttons from adjacent garments. For shawls with Sozni embroidery or fine Kani work, this can mean irreversible damage.

3. Exposure to Light and Dust

Hanging often means exposure — on a rail, behind a glass door, or in open wardrobes. This brings risks such as:

  • Sunlight fade, particularly on naturally dyed shawls
  • Accumulation of dust and household scents
  • Moth attraction if not properly shielded
For longevity, folded and covered storage is always preferable.

When Hanging Might Be Acceptable

There are a few exceptions where temporary hanging may be harmless or even helpful:

  • After steaming, to let the fabric breathe
  • To air out a shawl after wear for a few hours
  • For photo styling or visual display in a safe environment
If you do hang temporarily, use a wide, padded hanger or a shawl rack designed for delicate textiles.

How Should You Store Cashmere?

Fold, don’t hang. We recommend:

  • Folding the shawl loosely along its natural creases
  • Placing it inside a breathable cotton or muslin pouch
  • Adding cedar or silica sachets to prevent moths and humidity
  • Keeping it flat in a drawer, shelf, or archival box

Special Care for vonoz Bespoke Pieces

Shawls from our bespoke atelier are crafted with rare fibers and sensitive dye compositions. Hanging them, even briefly, can weaken their drape and integrity over time.

We include special care instructions and recommended storage methods with each bespoke piece.

vonoz Perspective

A cashmere shawl is not a coat. It’s not meant to be suspended — it’s meant to be wrapped, worn, and then gently folded. Hanging may offer convenience, but folding offers longevity.

True luxury whispers in the details. And care, as always, is the truest form of elegance.
